Name
E.13 Challenging Gender Bias and Toxic Masculinity in Physical Education & Sport
Date & Time
Friday, November 21, 2025, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Description

In many co-ed schools, gendered behaviours are quietly shaping how students participate in Physical Education, often to the detriment of girls. This one-hour workshop explores the rise of toxic masculinity in boys, particularly the ways it shows up as criticism, exclusion and disrespect toward girls during PE lessons and school sport.

Through a blend of research and real-world examples, participants will gain insight into how social norms, developmental differences and school culture influence boys’ behaviour and girls’ confidence. The workshop unpacks what toxic masculinity looks and feels like in a school setting and why it matters for the long-term engagement, wellbeing and empowerment of all students.

Attendees will learn to recognise early signs of bias and imbalance in PE spaces and walk away with practical strategies to create more respectful, inclusive and equitable lessons. From language use and role modelling to classroom structures and leadership opportunities for girls, the session offers concrete tools for change.
