E.01 Would I lie to you? A gameshow approach to teaching the Lactate Inflection Point (LIP) in VCE
Date & Time
Friday, November 21, 2025, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Description

The LIP reflects the last point where lactate entry into and removal from the blood are balanced. It is identified as the final exercise intensity or oxygen uptake value at which blood lactate concentration is relatively stable during a maximal aerobic test. The LIP of an individual represents the maximal intensity at which blood lactate is in steady state. The common goal of testing protocols and calculation methods to determine blood lactate levels is to identify the intensity at which lactate production exceeds lactate removal. Or is this fiction? Are we telling the truth or have we lied?
Separating fact from fiction can be difficult when teaching VCE students’ complex terminology when they may have pre-conceived ideas about lactate, lactate acid, the onset of blood lactate and what, exactly, causes the ‘burning sensation’ felt during high intensity exercise. To provide students with a unique way to learn and improve knowledge and understanding of the LIT, emphasising student choice and inquiry can help increase their knowledge of muscular fatigue mechanisms, including fuel depletion, accumulation of metabolic by-products and thermoregulatory fatigue linked to varied sport and exercise intensities and durations.

In this interactive ‘gameshow’ Dr Brendan O’Brien and Dr Stuart Evans will explain, demonstrate and teach strategies that explore a gameshow format to teach LIP whilst establishing communication, collaboration, and self-management skills that can help learn and engage with their peers.

Learning Objective
By attending this workshop, you will be able to:
• Apply and adapt an example gameshow format to teach the LIP in VCE.
• Develop a greater understanding of the LIP.

* Develop strategies that encourage student participation, communication and collaboration when learning about the LIP
