Name
C.09 Feedback in Play: Formative Assessment Through Territory Games
Date & Time
Thursday, November 20, 2025, 2:10 PM - 3:10 PM
Description

This interactive workshop explores how territory (invasion) games can be a powerful vehicle for embedding formative assessment and feedback strategies in Health and Physical Education for secondary students in Years 7–10. In alignment with the ACHPER conference theme " Connect, Move, Grow," this session will demonstrate how movement-rich experiences can drive student learning, strengthen teacher-student relationships, and foster a growth-focused classroom culture.

Participants will actively engage in modified territory (invasion) games that incorporate clear, practical feedback opportunities. Emphasis will be placed on formative assessment tools and strategies that are adaptable, time-efficient, and effective in real-world school settings. These include peer and self-assessment techniques, success criteria checklists, feedback frameworks (such as WWW/EBI and TAG), and strategies to promote student voice and reflection during and after gameplay.

By embedding feedback within game-based activities, teachers can enhance student understanding of performance, promote ownership of learning, and track progress without disrupting engagement. The workshop will also model ways to create a feedback-rich environment where students feel safe to take risks and grow.

Designed specifically for secondary HPE teachers, this session will provide participants with a practical toolkit of ready-to-use assessment strategies and game modifications tailored to the 7–10 curriculum. Educators will walk away with greater confidence in their ability to use movement as a medium to deepen feedback, improve learning outcomes, and strengthen classroom connections.
