Manosphere and More: Learning the language of our students today

Session Description

Health and Physical Education teachers are often the first adults to hear the language of the manosphere spoken aloud, in the gym, on the oval, in change rooms and in the margins of respectful relationships lessons. Terms like looksmaxxing, mewing, high value, the wall, mogging and sigma arrive via short-form video, gaming communities and group chats, carrying ideas about bodies, status, gender and worth that intersect directly with HPE content. Yet many teachers recognise the tone of these conversations without confidently understanding the vocabulary, the influencers behind it, or how to respond when the language is directed at peers, students or staff.

This practical session builds teacher fluency in the language young people are actually using and translates that fluency into classroom practice. Participants begin with a rapid terms-and-definitions match-up, a diagnostic and discussion starter that can be taken directly into staff professional learning. From there, we map how this content reaches students through algorithmic recommendation and where it intersects with HPE: body image and muscularity ideals, supplement and fitness misinformation, consent, help-seeking and emotional literacy.

The second half is response-focused. Participants workshop realistic classroom scenarios, practise responses that challenge ideas without shaming students, and consider when a comment is a teachable moment, a wellbeing concern or a workplace safety issue. Teachers will also explore how recognising this language can protect their own wellbeing and professional boundaries when online trends are used to belittle, stereotype or target educators.

Participants leave with a glossary, a ready-to-run match-up activity, a scenario bank and a set of response strategies tested in the room.
