Leading Through Sport Education: Developing Student Leaders Through the Sport Education in Physical Education Program (SEPEP)

Session Description

The Sport Education in Physical Education Program (SEPEP) is widely recognised for its ability to create authentic and meaningful sporting experiences for students. However, its greatest strength extends beyond skill development and game play. SEPEP provides a powerful framework for developing student leadership, fostering belonging and increasing engagement through purposeful movement. This practical and interactive session will explore how SEPEP can be used to transform students from passive participants into active contributors within Physical Education programs. Participants will examine how authentic roles such as coaches, referees, managers, statisticians, journalists and captains can be embedded into lessons to build leadership capacity, accountability and student ownership. Drawing on examples from Years 5–10, the session will showcase strategies that support inclusion, increase engagement among reluctant learners and create opportunities for every student to contribute meaningfully regardless of their physical ability. Attendees will explore how SEPEP aligns with the Victorian Curriculum, supports assessment practices and promotes positive learning environments where students thrive through movement. Participants will leave with practical resources, implementation strategies and adaptable templates that can be immediately applied within upper primary and secondary settings. Whether new to SEPEP or looking to refine existing programs, this session will provide actionable ideas to develop student leaders and create richer, more engaging Physical Education experiences.
