Menstrual and pelvic pain impacts students' daily lives and can affect their ability to engage in important education at school. Receiving evidence-based, curriculum-aligned education about this topic in school will help students who menstruate develop the skills and confidence to seek help early on to access treatment.
In response to a critical gap in this education, Sexual Health Victoria (SHV) has announced plans to offer more than 600 free education sessions to Victorian government schools to help reduce stigma about menstruation and pelvic pain and boost knowledge to support women, girls and people who menstruate to seek help early and improve long term health outcomes.
The program, delivered in partnership with the Department of Education, aims to not only help students feel better supported and more comfortable discussing menstrual health but also to provide education staff with the tools to best support the health and well-being of young people through the provision of free professional development.
By providing all students with the knowledge about the possible impacts that menstruation and pelvic pain can have on young people's daily lives, we can foster a future where menstruation is understood, supported and no longer a barrier to education.
