This presentation will explore the power of authentic community engagement in supporting inclusive practices and fostering student independence.
At Dharra School, we recognise that the biggest barriers our students face are often not ability, but access and perception. Misconceptions and low expectations can lead to exclusion, isolation, and under-participation in physical education and community life. Our Community Action PE program aims to shift this narrative by providing students with inclusive and meaningful opportunities to participate in the Greater Melton community.
We have built strong partnerships with local organisations, enabling us to deliver real-world learning experiences such as:
• Basketball clinics with Specialists Hoops
• Travel training to parks and recreational spaces
• Fitness sessions at Anytime Fitness
• Outdoor education at Blackwood Special Education Outdoor Centre
To ensure student success, we use strategies such as:
• “Welcome Circles” to set routines and expectations
• Purposeful intra-school programs to develop vocabulary and context
• Visual schedules and Social Stories to reduce anxiety and build understanding
• AAC tools to support communication
These supports build student confidence and independence while also challenging community perceptions - showcasing what students with additional needs can achieve when included, prepared, and supported by providing different examples.
• Planning strategies that align with Child Safe and School Expectations
• Implementing tools to prepare and support students effectively
