Emeritus Professor Julie Byles AO B.Med PhD FAAHMS AAG Fellow has had a long career as an academic with the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Medical Research Institute. She was a founding investigator and a director of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health, following the oldest cohort from age 70 to 100+. Her work as an epidemiologist and gerontologist has taken her around the world training scientists and advocating for healthy ageing, preventive health care, and aged care. She fights off jet lag by going to museums and art galleries, from the National Museum of Ethiopia to the Tate, and from Singapore Art Gallery to the New York Met. Back home she honed her hand and eye at The Drawing Room, fuelled by red wine, chat and laughter. She relishes the joy of seeing a blank page fill with colour and personality, capturing the mood of the moment and the story behind the scene. In this exhibition she combines and shares these “left brain” and “right brain” passions colouring her insights into human ageing with her drive to “do art”.
