AIMS: This study examined the prevalence of people living with dementia (PLWD) living with an undiagnosed depression in a Residential Aged Care Service (RACS) and aimed at providing solutions and recommendations to avoid/prevent the continuation of this debilitating scenario. Screening of 38 PLWD occurred. METHODOLOGY: Past and existing medical, physiological, cognitive, psychological and emotional health were closely examined, (inclusive of medication reviews), by completing relevant investigations, and using validated depression, functional, delirium, and cognitive scales. It was necessary to delve into the persons pre-morbid life story, and diversity, to establish maintenance of choice, control, purpose and worth, including whether the built environment was enabling or disabling. This comprehensive approach allowed an accurate informative approach to assessing effectiveness of support, (or not), and to eliminate acute delirium. If depression was indicated, treatment was immediately initiated. RESULTS: The results indicated that depression was successfully treated in majority of participants. Further encouraging results included: • Improved cognition • Reduction/elimination-stress-related responses • Increased intake/enjoyment dining • Healthy weight range • Reduced infections • Increased engagement/socialisation/interaction • Improved functional ability • Reduction of falls and serious fall related injury • Improved skin integrity • Enhanced productive sleep • Maximised quality of life One concerning outcome was the apparent misdiagnosis of 4 participants who returned to their previous full cognitive presentation post treatment of their depression. This study may assist in facilitating profound, enabling, personalised approaches to support, creating inspiring, respectful, and meaningful life experiences, whilst empowering PLWD to live their best lives, free of depression.
