Australia’s growing population of adults aged 65 and over heightens the need to address factors influencing healthy ageing. Social isolation, often resulting from shrinking social networks, poses significant risks to wellbeing. This study examines Australian interventions targeting social isolation and highlights the importance of the home environment, opportunities for meaningful social connection, and the diversity between older adults. A motivated professional workforce is identified as essential for effective practice. The study also notes the impacts of diagnostic overshadowing, where social isolation is overlooked by health professionals. A biopsychopharmacosocial approach is recommended to support holistic assessment, reduce diagnostic overshadowing and promote social prescribing as a strategy to reduce isolation and promote healthy ageing.
