The Ageing Revolution refers to social, cultural, economic and political changes associated with the rapid ageing of our society. There will be more old people and more of them will live longer. The rapid socio-cultural change will bring opportunities for some and perils for others. This poster narrates graphically and with text the personal and social challenges to growth and development in old age. Myths like “decline in old age is inevitable”, “work hard and enjoy retirement”, children will look after their elderly parents”, create false expectations of what it is to be old. Self-deceits such as clinging to outmoded ideas of self, ideas of self entitlement, and denial of the need to adapt personally to the changed circumstances of old age, can be associated with cognitive rigidity, resentment and depression. Negotiating these challenges clears the way the responding constructively to ageism and other forms of structural violence. More importantly, the person will continue to grow and learn, lead a life that has meaning and purpose and will discover that old age, in the words of Simone de Beauvoir, is “a period of life, different from youth and maturity, possessing its own balance, and leaving a wide range of possibilities open to the individual.” The significant implications for mental health promotion will be outlined. The author is a clinical psychologist who has worked predominantly with old people for 56 years.
