In Australia, reforms to aged care have been enacted in response to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (Australian Government, 2022; Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, 2021). These reforms include the introduction of the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards which took effect in November 2025 (Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025). In recognition of the high prevalence of trauma in older people, the strengthened standards require that aged care organisations deliver trauma-informed care (TIC), referred to as trauma-aware, healing-informed care, within Residential Aged Care (RAC). However, there is a lack of clarity of what trauma-aware, healing-informed care is and little practical guidance to support organisations in understanding what this looks like in practice. This presentation will share key findings from a PhD project in which a blueprint for trauma-informed care has been developed specifically for RAC. The blueprint addresses significant TIC knowledge and practice gaps and provides an actionable framework and evidence-informed, practical guidelines to support the implementation of TIC approaches in RAC contexts. This work supports providers to understand what trauma-aware, healing-informed care is and the practical strategies needed to support TIC practice across the individual, interpersonal, organisational and systemic levels. This work is also aligned with the strengthened standards and will support service providers to meet accreditation requirements by embedding TIC principles into existing practices.
