Bernadette is an experienced Senior Teacher at Queensland Children’s Hospital School (QCHS), where she works with young people experiencing complex medical and mental health challenges to maintain connection with learning during periods of illness and treatment.

Prior to her teaching career, Bernadette worked as a clinical and research biochemist, developing a strong foundation in health, science, and evidence-based practice. Driven by a passion for education and supporting young people, she transitioned into teaching more than 20 years ago and has since built extensive experience across a range of educational settings.

Bernadette spent nine years teaching in mainstream secondary schools in Brisbane before relocating to Perth, where she joined the Perth Children’s Hospital School and the Statewide Services for Students with Medical and Mental Health Needs (SSEN). During this time, she developed specialist expertise in supporting students whose health circumstances impact their educational participation and achievement.

Returning to Brisbane in 2020, Bernadette joined Queensland Children’s Hospital School, where she continues to advocate for educational continuity, student wellbeing, and successful reintegration into learning. Her professional interests include hospital education, student transitions, educational engagement, and understanding the long-term educational outcomes of young people who experience significant health challenges.
