Officiating is often viewed as a functional role focused on rules and compliance. Yet officiating provides young people with authentic opportunities to develop leadership, communication, decision-making, responsibility and emotional regulation skills. This interactive workshop explores how secondary schools can create opportunities through officiating as a meaningful leadership and learning pathway within Health and Physical Education (HPE), student leadership programs and school sport. Drawing on the Australian Sports Commission's emerging Officiating Capability Framework and the draft Officiating Action Plan, participants will explore practical strategies to position officiating as a positive developmental experience that supports student engagement, belonging and lifelong participation in sport. The workshop supports the Action Plan priority ‘to strengthen awareness, understanding and perceptions of officiating’ by repositioning officiating as a form of leadership that enables safe, fair and enjoyable sporting experiences.
