Every Minute Counts: Maximising Movement and Learning in PE

Session Description

In many PE lessons, valuable movement time is lost through transitions, lengthy explanations, inefficient routines, equipment management, and assessment demands. Yet for many students, Physical Education may be the most active part of their school day. Every minute counts. This practical and engaging session explores simple, realistic strategies PE teachers can use to maximise student activity time while maintaining quality teaching, explicit instruction, and meaningful assessment. Drawing on real-world primary PE experiences, participants will unpack common “hidden time wasters” and examine approaches that improve lesson flow, increase engagement, and create more active learning environments. Topics explored include streamlining transitions, reducing downtime, embedding explicit teaching within active learning, simplifying assessment practices, improving equipment organisation, and building consistent lesson routines that save time across an entire term. Participants will leave with a collection of practical, classroom-tested strategies that can be implemented immediately to reclaim valuable minutes in every PE lesson. By maximising movement opportunities and reducing unnecessary downtime, teachers can create more engaging, inclusive, and impactful Physical Education experiences where every minute contributes to student participation, wellbeing, and thriving through movement.
