Teaching Biomechanics in Unit 3 & 4 PE: Practical Strategies for Student Success

Session Description

Biomechanics is often regarded as one of the most challenging topics in VCE Physical Education, but it doesn't have to be. This engaging session will explore effective approaches to teaching the biomechanics principals, making complex movement concepts accessible, relevant and memorable for students. Using authentic sporting examples, movement analysis, case studies and teaching strategies, participants will examine ways to teach key concepts including force production, projectile motion, balance and stability, angular motion, and Newton's Laws of Motion. The session focuses on translating theoretical content into meaningful learning experiences that improve both student engagement and examination performance. Participants will explore visual teaching tools, classroom activities, assessment strategies and practical ideas that can be incorporated into lessons to help students apply biomechanical principles to sporting performance rather than simply memorising definitions. Common student misconceptions, effective questioning techniques and approaches to developing higher-order responses aligned with VCAA assessment expectations will also be examined. Whether you are new to teaching VCE Physical Education or looking to refine an established program, you will leave with fresh teaching ideas, greater confidence in delivering biomechanics, and strategies to help students develop a deeper understanding of one of the most conceptually demanding areas of the Unit 3 & 4 course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Apply practical strategies to teach the biomechanics content in Unit 3 & 4 VCE Physical Education.
Use authentic sporting examples and movement analysis to improve student understanding of key biomechanical principles.
Identify and address common student misconceptions in biomechanics.
Implement classroom demonstrations, visual resources and assessment techniques that support deeper learning.
Develop teaching approaches that strengthen students' ability to apply biomechanical concepts in VCAA-style examination responses.
