Young people are navigating an increasingly complex online world shaped by social media algorithms, sexualised content, influencer culture and emerging forms of online exploitation. For educators and wellbeing professionals, understanding these challenges — and knowing how to respond proactively — has become essential. This interactive session explores two interconnected areas impacting schools and communities: sextortion and online grooming, alongside the growing influence of manosphere content and online relationship influencers on young people’s attitudes, behaviour and wellbeing. Drawing on Elephant Ed’s experience delivering preventative education to over 100,000 students annually, the session will unpack current trends, statistics and online behaviours affecting children and young people. Participants will explore how sextortion and grooming commonly occur online, the platforms where first contact is most likely to happen, and the warning signs educators and carers should be aware of. The session will also examine how influencers and algorithm-driven content can shape young people’s understandings of masculinity, relationships, consent and respect. Through practical examples and discussion, participants will develop strategies to build critical thinking, strengthen digital literacy and foster respectful relationship cultures within school communities. Attendees will leave with practical, age-appropriate approaches to preventative education that support safer online decision-making and meaningful conversations with young people about influence, relationships and online safety.
