Making Good Writing Great in VCE OES
Session Description
In a subject that requires students to demonstrate deep knowledge to be successful, what transforms a good response into a great one? This session draws on more than 20 years of combined VCAA exam assessment experience to unpack the subtle but significant differences that elevate student writing in VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies.
Presented by Adam Hipwell and Ryan Murdock, the workshop will explore authentic student samples, common errors and practical teaching strategies that help students communicate with greater depth and sophistication. Participants will leave with ready to use strategies to strengthen student literacy, improve assessment outcomes and support learners to thrive through explicit and scaffolded writing instruction.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, participants will have a clearer understanding of the characteristics that distinguish high level VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies responses from competent responses. They will be able to identify common strengths and shortcomings in student writing, apply practical strategies to explicitly teach higher order response skills and use assessor informed feedback techniques to improve student outcomes. Participants will also leave with authentic examples, classroom ready approaches and greater confidence in supporting students to write with precision, depth and sophistication in assessment tasks and examinations.
