From PMP to Physical Literacy: Practical FMS Assessment and Intervention for Schools
Session Description
Some students require additional support to develop the fundamental movement skills, confidence and physical foundations needed to successfully participate in games, sport and physical activity. These movement challenges can also affect children beyond the PE lesson, influencing their readiness to learn, classroom participation and ability to self-regulate throughout the school day. Without targeted intervention, students can quickly disengage from movement, impacting not only their participation in PE, but also their confidence, engagement, wellbeing and overall learning outcomes.
Drawing on principles familiar to many schools through PMP, this approach extends beyond traditional movement circuits to provide targeted intervention activities that students love that is grounded in physical literacy and practical movement assessment strategies
This practical session will explore a brief school-based intervention approach designed to support children with poor fundamental movement skills (FMS) through targeted, small-group instruction. Participants will engage in practical demonstrations of easy-to-implement FMS assessment strategies that can be used across whole classes to identify students requiring additional movement support. The session will also explore how assessment information can guide intervention planning, monitor progress over time, and support communication with families, allied health professionals and school leadership teams.
Importantly, the session will highlight how movement intervention can support children far beyond PE. The program incorporates activities targeting core strength, crossing the midline, balance, coordination, body awareness and vestibular development to help students build the physical foundations needed for successful participation in both movement and classroom learning environments. By improving movement competence and confidence, schools can better support children’s self-regulation, engagement, participation and readiness to learn.
The session will include practical demonstrations of intervention activities and assessment, examples of implementation within a school setting, and strategies for embedding targeted support within existing PE and school structures. Attendees will leave with practical tools, assessment strategies and intervention ideas that can immediately be applied within their own school context to better support students who need it most.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Use a quick and practical FMS assessment tool to identify students requiring additional movement support.
Explore how movement intervention builds on familiar PMP principles to support coordination, confidence, self-regulation and readiness to learn.
Take part in practical activities targeting FMS, core strength, bilateral coordination, crossing the midline and vestibular development.
Understand how a physical literacy approach can improve participation, engagement and confidence beyond PE.
Develop strategies for tracking progress and communicating outcomes with families, allied health professionals and school leadership teams.
Examine practical approaches for embedding intervention programs within existing school and PE structures.
