Workshop 1 - Preserving Musculoskeletal Health in Older Adults on GLP-1 Receptor Agonists: Evidence, Assessment, and Exercise / Nutrition Prescription
Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) achieve substantial weight loss, yet up to 40% of this reduction may comprise lean mass. This loss of lean tissue is accompanied by declines in bone density, and, for older adults in particular, may increase risks for sarcopenia, frailty, osteoporosis and fractures, with subsequent loss of independence.
This practical workshop bridges emerging scientific evidence and clinical implementation. Following the workshop, participants will be familiar with current evidence on GLP-1 RA effects on the musculoskeletal system and clinical guidelines for muscle health assessment, and able to apply appropriate strategies to engage in muscle health screening alongside targeted, home-based exercise prescription and dietary strategies.
Workshop 2 - Practical Approaches to Managing Physical Frailty in Older Adults: From Assessment to Action
The first step in managing physical frailty begins with identifying it. In this workshop attendees will learn about and apply contemporary frailty screening tools that are quick and easy to use in clinical practice.
The next step is personalised treatment to address physical frailty. Exercise and nutrition are first line therapies for managing physical frailty in older adults. At this workshop, attendees will learn about and apply the foundational principles of exercise and nutrition to support people living with different degrees of frailty.
