Dementia is now the leading cause of death and disease burden in Australia, with prevalence significantly higher in rural compared to urban areas. Supporting older people in rural communities to age well is therefore of critical importance. Dementia risk reduction (DRR), through targeting modifiable risk factors, is an evidence based approach to healthy ageing, with place based, co designed interventions showing particular promise in rural settings. The Rise and Shine for Caregivers prototype is a DRR intervention co designed with the rural Kilkivan District community for caregivers of people living with dementia, a group identified locally as requiring targeted support. The program was built around three core pillars: promoting healthy lifestyles, fostering mental wellbeing, and providing accessible dementia information. It comprised ten two hour, fortnightly, in person group workshops using a Food Fun Facts format: shared morning tea (food), social interaction (fun), and a guest speaker on a relevant topic (facts). Evaluation focused on feasibility, acceptability, and qualitative participant feedback. Ten caregivers (five women) participated, with seven attending at least five sessions. Attendance barriers included caregiving responsibilities. Qualitative feedback (n=9) indicated high satisfaction, increased perceived social support, improved knowledge of healthy lifestyle behaviours and dementia, and strong interest in program continuation. The pilot program was acceptable, with participants reporting enhanced social support and dementia related knowledge. Given caregiving demands limited attendance for some, to improve feasibility, future refinement could include concurrent respite support for people living with dementia. Findings will inform a larger program and provide a blueprint for similar rural initiatives.
