LGBT+ people with dementia face compounding barriers to accessing inclusive health and aged care. Subtle discrimination within services and systems not designed for them can drive isolation and worsen health inequities. Dementia Australia has partnered with ACON to develop an online LGBT+ resource hub, informed by co-design with people with lived experience. Drawing on this work, we examine barriers to disclosure and how to affirm identity as cognition declines. This presentation outlines practical initiatives to build psychologically safe environments, the importance of affirming language in documentation, and how gender identity, sexual orientation, and relationship recognition intersect with cognitive ageing. The aged care and health sectors have a role to play in advocating for reform. This presentation will help attendees recognise and interrupt discrimination, and build trauma-informed, affirming practice to better support LGBT+ people living with dementia.
