Background – Learning in health and research spaces is often siloed, separating the experiences and knowledge of people with lived experience from those with professional experience. This is particularly true for dementia, where perceptions of reduced capacity can exclude people living with dementia and their carers from health and care conversations. Aim – The Dementia Learning & Research Community is a virtual community of practice that aims to bring together people with an interest or expertise in dementia to share knowledge, experiences and insights that enhance understanding of dementia, research and care practices in Australia. Methods – We followed a co-design approach, running six workshops with people with personal and professional (including health and aged care professionals and researchers) experiences of dementia, where participants shaped all aspects of the community. A Public Advisory Group also provided guidance. Results – Sixteen participants attended the workshops. They identified the need for a respectful online space that could be accessed anywhere in Australia, with events including webinars and panel discussions. Participants wanted to learn about personal experiences of dementia, all types of dementia related research, and successful community innovations, amongst other topics. The Community has now been running since February 2025 and has held numerous events for the 200+ community members, as well as public webinars. Conclusion – The Dementia Learning & Research Community has successfully created a space for people with personal and professional experiences of dementia to come together and learn about different aspects of dementia research and share insights, knowledge and experiences.
