Background
The health, social, and economic challenges of dementia are magnified in rural Australia, where geographic isolation and limited access to healthcare services contribute to dementia prevalence rates up to five times that of urban areas. With no current cure, interventions targeting modifiable risk factors are a key strategy for dementia prevention and awareness.
Methods
Building on our prior consultations with rural communities, this study aimed to co-design a place-based dementia risk reduction prototype with consumers (n = 16) and stakeholders (n = 7). Twenty-three rural Australians (aged 29-89, 82.6% female) participated in three workshop sessions: (1) mapping relevant community strengths and challenges, (2) brainstorming practical solutions leveraging local resources, and (3) developing a place-based dementia risk reduction prototype.
Results
The co-design process identified local caregivers of people living with dementia as the primary user group, given their elevated risk of developing dementia themselves. To address modifiable dementia risk factors for these individuals, the prototype is centred on three core areas: promoting healthy lifestyles, fostering mental wellbeing, and providing accessible, evidence-based dementia information. The prototype incorporates an interactive “Food–Fun–Facts” framework designed to enhance community engagement through locally-relevant social activities and educational resources.
Discussion and Conclusion
Involving rural community members and stakeholders supports the development and sustainability of place-based dementia risk reduction initiatives that maximise local resources. Our co-designed prototype offers potential for long-term impact in the pilot community and provides a scalable model for addressing dementia risk reduction in rural and underserved regions.
