Introduction: Residential respite care (RRC) is a form of short-term support in residential aged care homes (RACHs) for older people whose usual carers are temporarily unavailable. Previous research and consumer engagement have identified the need for improved clinical communication during the transition to respite care. The 3C Program was developed to address this gap. The program utilises short video vignettes to convey essential person-centred and clinical information about respite recipients to RRC staff in an accessible, audiovisual format.
Method: Older adults entering RRC and their day-to-day carers are recruited as dyads to participate in the 3C Program. A personalised video vignette is produced for each dyad, involving the recording of a brief interview, and clips of the respite recipient demonstrating activities of daily living and physical capabilities. Footage is then edited down into a 3–5 minute video. This video captures key information about the respite recipient's health, care preferences, and personal qualities, alongside representations of their physical function. Videos are then sent to staff at the RACH the respite recipient enters.
Conclusion: To date, we have produced 18 videos with 18 respite recipient and carer dyads. These videos have been accessed by respite care staff across 7 Victorian RACHs. These videos provide RRC staff with a humanising snapshot of a respite recipient’s health, abilities, and personal qualities as they were before going into respite care. Video vignettes may offer a novel, person-centred tool to support clinical handover and improve continuity of care for people in residential respite settings.
