Description
The loss of biodiversity can be considered one of the greatest global risks. Studies show that the decline is dramatic. Measures to counter this trend are expected not only from governments, but increasingly also from companies, as they have a substantial influence due to the impact of their actions. Companies in the energy sector play a key role in this, as the way energy is generated and consumed is particularly important for the protection of biodiversity. Despite this relevance, research on biodiversity management practices by electric utilities is still in its infancy. Against this background the study examines the biodiversity management practices of electric utilities in Austria and New Zealand, both countries with many years of experience in protecting biodiversity. Methodologically, the study is based on a documentary analysis of biodiversity-related information from reports and company websites, supplemented by semi-structured interviews. The findings show that the electric utilities examined not only publish information about their biodiversity commitment but also apply a variety of different management control practices.
